Located at the foot of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Chéticamp Co-op is a diversified retail organization that has proudly served its community since 1937. With combined annual sales of approximately $16 million, the Co-op’s operations include a food store, Home Hardware, funeral home, and rental property portfolio.
Chéticamp Co-op is seeking an experienced Accounting Supervisor to oversee its financial operations and provide reliable financial insight to support organizational planning and decision-making. Reporting to the General Manager, this position combines hands-on accounting, financial leadership, strategic planning, and team supervision.
The Accounting Supervisor will be an important member of the management team and will work closely with operational leaders across the organization. This opportunity is well suited to an experienced accounting professional who can work independently, assess existing financial practices, identify areas for improvement, and bring structure and clarity to a diverse and community-focused operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of Chéticamp Co-op and its related business entities
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and management information
- Lead budgeting, financial planning, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support operational and strategic decision-making
- Review existing accounting practices, reconcile historical information, and address outstanding financial matters as required
- Establish, maintain, and strengthen financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Manage bank reconciliations, government remittances, GST reporting, and other regulatory requirements
- Oversee payroll and employee benefits administration
- Support the financial aspects of inventory management and control
- Coordinate year-end audit preparation and work with external accountants
- Oversee the financial administration of memberships, customer charge accounts, and collections
- Supervise and support members of the accounting and administrative team
Qualifications
- CPA designation is required
- Degree in accounting, commerce, finance, or a related field
- Minimum of five years of progressive accounting experience
- Demonstrated experience managing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and internal controls
- Experience supervising or supporting accounting and administrative employees
- Ability to work independently, identify priorities, and resolve complex or outstanding accounting matters
- Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Professional communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a close-knit management team
- Experience in retail or a multi-entity environment is considered an asset
- Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset
This is a full-time, in-office position based in Chéticamp, Nova Scotia, with regular hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some additional hours or occasional weekend work may be required during inventory and other peak periods.
