Role Overview
The Assistant Controller provides detail-oriented and analytical support to the Director Finance & Accounting and the finance team within a fast-paced construction environment. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing timely reports, and supporting the senior finance team with budgeting, cost tracking, and project accounting.
The ideal candidate will bring strong financial acumen and a proactive approach to supporting day-to-day finance operations and continuous improvement initiatives.
This is an 18-month contract position.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Complete the monthly, quarterly and annual close process and reporting (including consolidated financial statements) within the established timeline
- Analyze and interpret the financial results compared to budgets and forecasts, in collaboration with other departments
- Support month-end internal and external financial reporting, as well as ad-hoc financial analysis
- Assist with the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors, providing necessary documentation
- Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulations, and internal controls
- Assist with the development and management of financial controls in accordance with the Company’s procedures
- Support the budgeting process by gathering financial data and collaborating with department heads to create comprehensive budget forecasts
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and report variances to senior management with actionable insights
- Assist with working capital management and cash flow forecasting
- Responsible for completing statutory and Company specific filings within established deadlines, including HST returns, payroll filings and bank reporting
- Assist with creating, maintaining, and administering Company policies and identifying potential areas for process improvement
- Mentor finance and accounting team members, fostering professional development and addressing any operational inefficiencies
- Support and cross-train to Finance department processes
- Performs other duties as required
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance;
- CPA designation preferred, or actively enrolled in the final stages of the CPA program
- Minimum 5 years of experience performing full cycle accounting or a similar finance role, with a focus on construction, mechanical contracting, or a related industry preferred
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices, as well as financial regulations
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial information effectively
- Proven experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work well under stringent time constraints and respond to changes in priorities
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities and see projects through to completion
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment
- Computer literate with accounting software and Microsoft Office, especially Excel
